This establishment would soon become a critical resource for the study of human sexuality and began to publish reports and research findings that explored issues beyond the realm of traditional societal focus. One of the first empirical researchers on human sexual behavior, Kinsey founded the Institute for Sexual Research in 1947. Maintaining an open relationship with his wife, Kinsey argued that sexuality should be un-restricted and that any sexual act–so long as it involved consent and gender equality–deserved to be treated as a natural and healthy part of life. In opposition to the prevailing conservative and repressive attitudes on sexuality during his time, Kinsey believed that sexuality should not be hidden from public discourse and should instead be addressed in an honest manner. One of the most meaningful changes in modern perceptions of sexuality was initiated in the 1940s by the work of American scientist Alfred Kinsey.
